AOD Trans issues
April 2025. Trans started making ugly gear noises.
Randy Keever
I pulled the AOD and took to Randy Keevers on Old Dalles Rd. Randy took some time with it but found that the overdrive band was shot. He repaired and added a mild shift kit.
Note from Randy ... look in Projects/Cars/54Panel for PDF
7 June 2025-Got AOD installed but not completely yet.

It's Alive!!!! ... Again
3 Feb 2019 - Engine starts and runs for the first time in years.
Steps to get started...1. Drained old gas from tank. It was clean but smelly.
2. Added a bit of Marvel Mystery oil to cylinders and shot some aerosol fogging oil into cylinders. Then hand cranked it several rotations to ensure that we didn't have a dry start.
3. Bought a simple oil pump tool and used it to prime the pump and get some oil up into the valves.
4. Found that Fuel Pump Relay didn't seem to be activating even though there was voltage from the switch. Found a wire with a broken tab in the connector.
4a. Trans neutral safety switch is also kind of prone to open up and then it doesn't crank at all.
5. Added gas but it apparently takes at least 3 gallons in order to cover the fuel pickup tube. The fuel pump did not come up to pressure and kept running until more gas was added.

Where are we? What's next?
Big Blue escaped its confinement in the shipping container and is now in the shop where it can be worked on.
To Do...
- store hood somewhere
- Assess what need to be done to get it started.
- check and bleed brakes
- charge battery
- check fuel in tank
- secure dash panel wires

Damn, another year. No wonder thing isn't on the road yet.
Its been almost a year since I updated this blog...
I have been working on the new wiring harness lately. That's the project of the month. Currently, the harness is in place and the rear section is in place. I've wired up the new shiny instrument panel and its almost ready to go in. But first there are a few lost wires to find and some questions to ask of the folks at Mid-Fifty's.
In the process of wiring up the brake light switch I discovered that the Brake On/Off (BOO) input to the ECC was not routed through the Crown Vic harness. The BOO come from the back switch so I'll have to route it. In the process, I also found that the wiring diagram is totally wrong for connector B45B...anyway, I can work around it. It does contain the BOO circuit though.

AOD shifter & Throttle Valve Issue Resolution
Now there is clearance for the TV cable. I had to then also create a new shifter linkage because now there is a 4 in difference in the Lokar shifter and the trans.
This is the finished linkage.
Note: I had to go to two different Ford dealers to find the TV cable to Throttle Body bushing. Apparently, Ford is not really supporting 1989 parts any more. Anyway I threw in an image of the bushing and parts bag to make it easier to run down this part in the future.
TODO NEXT: Rework throttle linkage. Its a complete redo because originally I thought that I wasn't going to need the throttle bracket (but I need it for TV cable) and the original hard linkage worked fine. Now with the bracket in place I need to come up with something completely different.

Not much happening in January
Distractions like a couple of trees coming down, road trips to Port Townsend (tractor buying), Skagit River (Bald eagle watching) and winter camping have kept me from working on the Panel much this month.
Next project is the Throttle Valve cable. There are some clearance issues with the stock cable and the Lokar shifter so will have to do some modifications there. Will probably get started in later this week if it warms up a bit.

Its Alive!!!
Started working on the project again in the middle of November with the goal of getting it to run by the end of November and to be able to drive it around the drive way by years end.
Once the wiring harness was pretty much in place there was an annoying problem where the starter wanted to crank with the key in the ON position instead of START. It took a while but I found that there was an extra wire in the harness which is to be used only on the 5.8L engine. It was in the wiring diagram in the Haynes manual with no note so I hooked it up. The wiring diagram that I got online had the all important note. Once disconnected the engine cranked and fired right up.
Ok, so by Thanksgiving it was running albeit very rich and uneven. Then came the big storm and my subsequent back issues so it was a few weeks before I got back to troubleshooting.
Dec 30, 2006 - I found that the MAP was not connected to correct vacuum line. Got that and a few other vacuum issues straightened out and it starts and runs smooth and strong.
TODO NEXT: Throttle valve cable needs a new bushing, needs installed and then adjusted. Plus need some more wiring clean up and it will be close to being ready to drop off the jack stands and put into gear.
